TWO motorists who ploughed into a group of pedestrians during the Eid festival — leaving a 12-year-old boy in a coma — have been told they face jail.

Furqaan Mohmed, a 19-year-old operational support worker for Greater Manchester Police and Mohammed Patel, aged 20, appeared at Bolton Crown Court yesterday and pleaded guilty to a number of charges including causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Adjourning sentence until October 28 to allow reports to be prepared, Judge Peter Davies told the pair: “You must understand that the likely sentence is custody. The fact that I’m giving you bail is no indication of what the sentence will be.”

The two men admitted being the drivers of two Vauxhall Astras which collided with a BMW 320 and a group of pedestrians in St Helens Road at 11.30pm on July 21.

Essa Academy pupil Raheem Hussain was struck and suffered head, brain and leg injuries requiring two operations.

Saleem Mogradia, aged 51, who was also hit, ended up with a fractured spine, six fractured ribs, a punctured lung and plates had to be inserted in an arm.

Standing in the dock, Patel pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving while banned and without insurance and attempting to pervert the course of justice by claiming Mohammed Vohra was the vehicle’s driver.

Mohmed admitted two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

At an earlier hearing Vohra, aged 20, pleaded guilty to attempting to pervert the course of justice and will also be sentenced on October 28.

The Bolton News challenged an order preventing the press from identifying the defendants’ addresses, but Judge Davies rejected the appeal.
