Amateur photographer launches 'crowdfunding' bid to pay for first exhibition
AN amateur photographer has launched his own online Dragons’ Den-style campaign — in an attempt to fund his first exhibition.
James Hargreaves, aged 28, of Rydal Road, Heaton, has launched a campaign on the donation-based website Indiegogo, a funding platform for creative projects.
Mr Hargreaves aims to raise £1,500 by Tuesday, November 5.
Indiegogo, like fellow crowdfunding site Kickstarter, is a website where people pitch their ideas and readers decide whether they want to invest in them.
Previous success stories include the Pebble Watch, which nearly 69,000 people pledged more than $10 million for on Kickstarter. While not expecting to make millions just yet, Mr Hargreaves is nevertheless optimistic about his chances of success.
Mr Hargreaves said: “It’s a great opportunity for me because everybody is on the same level. If it helps me develop my career and achieve my goals, it can’t do any harm can it?”
Online funding is increasingly becoming the go-to option for aspiring artists, after an eight per cent cut to Arts Council funding in the last budget.
There was a reduction of £390,000 to Manchester’s arts resources last year. Mr Hargreaves said: “If I want to make a business out of it, there’s very little help or advice to go about it. I’ve had to find everything out for myself.”
But his passion for photography is clearly what keeps him going.
He said: “It’s a lot of hard work, especially when you get up at five in the morning to get a picture of a sunrise.
“But when you get back and have a look through the pictures, you realise it’s worth it.
“All I want to do is take the first step towards getting an exhibit of my work.
“I just need people’s help and then hopefully it’ll be onwards and upwards from there.”
If Mr Hargreaves receives the necessary funding, he will be able to print 25 of his images to gallery standard.
