Opera star Laurie Ashworth to perform Verdi's Requiem at Victoria Hall
SINGING sensation Laurie Ashworth is coming back to Bolton to star in Verdi’s Requiem.
The 30-year-old has performed at many of the UK’s top venues and will take to the stage at the Victoria Hall in a huge production featuring three choirs.
Soprano Ms Ashworth, went from Bolton School Girls’ Division to being a prize-winning performer — and has been described by The Times as “a delectable Strauss soprano in the making.”
She won the prestigious Kathleen Ferrier Award in 2011 and was narrowly beaten in the final of the BBC Radio 2 Kiri Competition — a prestigious nationwide search with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa to find a new opera star.
In the summer of 2012 Ms Ashworth made her BBC Proms debut in the world premiere of Bob Chilcott’s The Angry Planet.
Now living in Manchester, she said: “The abundance of music at Bolton School was one of my main reasons for going there. I remember visiting before I took the entrance exam and thinking ‘I really want to come here’. While at school I had so many opportunities to participate in both the senior choir and chamber choir, and the music department regularly held informal concerts which were fantastic opportunities to perform.
“I remember the choir performed Verdi’s Requiem — and that’s something that’s stuck with me as it’s such a wonderful piece.”
Sue Hincks, headteacher at Bolton School Girls’ Division, said: “We are delighted she has built on this experience and has now reached such high levels. It offers real inspiration to our current pupils.”
The production, on November 23, will feature the Lancaster Singers, Preston Cecilian Choral Society and Prestbury Choral Society, and will be accompanied by the Lancashire Sinfonietta.
The soloists are soprano: Laurie, mezzo-soprano: Janet Shell, tenor: John Upperton and tass: Laurence Meikle. The conductor is Marco Fanti.
Tickets are available from Bolton Town Hall for £16. Call 01204 334400 or visit concert-diary.com/concert/ 485425163/Verdi-s-Requiem.
