Canon Slade's sports department named one of the best in the UK
OFSTED inspectors have named the sports department at a Bolton secondary school one of the top 10 in the UK.
Canon Slade School in Bradshaw impressed so much at a general inspection in May this year that Ofsted officials returned on September 24, specifically to assess the sports department.
A special report — due to be published later this year — cited the school’s commitment to sport, the appreciation students have for their work and the expert teachers with specialist knowledge as outstanding features.
Canon Slade is tradit-ionally strong at basketball, athletics and cross-country, but staff expansions have seen the school develop its work in football, rugby and handball.
Teachers run countless successful sports teams, with cross-country, biath-lon, tennis, swimming and cheerleading teams compet-ing nationally last year.
Head of PE, Carol Brooking, said: “It really is a team effort and something that reflects many years of work.
“The ability to juggle so many teams and ensure students can compete in all sports, which often clash, is down to the work of the whole department.”
Assistant headteacher Philip Moxon, who oversees the PE department, said: “What sets our staff apart is their commitment.
“They are willing to work after hours and at weekends to get the students to fixtures.
“Their work in preparing the students for exams is also great and we get excellent results.
Chris Brookes, the head of boys’ PE, said: “I think why we’re especially proud is that we get students from 92 primary schools, not five or six, so we can’t work with children before they get to us.
“We start from scratch and, given that, I think we do remarkably well in the circumstances.”
He added that the 1,700-pupil faith school has a strong starting point in terms of funding, but sacrifices from the teachers and parents have been needed to make their success possible.
Three of the school’s five football sides won regional titles last year, while the emerging rugby team is going from strength to strength.
In addition to Mr Moxon, Mr Brookes and Mrs Brooking, the school’s other PE staff, integral to securing such a glowing report, are Simon Rees, Mike Vell, Craig Robinson, Owen Roberts, Sue Manning, Nicola Cooke, Lianne Singleton and Di Skelly.
They are supported by fellow staff members Neil Pilkington, Chris Stainton, Andrew Jackson, Karl Harrison-Scott and Jamie Pilling.
