Wife's shock after husband is found dead in bed
A GRIEVING widow has said she is “still numb” after her husband was found dead in his bed.
Debbie Roberts had to call on the police to break into her husband, Karl Roberts’ flat, in Bromwich Street, Bolton because she had not heard from him for several days.
And to her horror, Mr Roberts, aged 46, was found dead.
Mrs Roberts said: “I hadn’t been able to contact Karl in a few days and he had not been feeling well, he had been throwing up and then one day he collapsed — so I had made him go and see the doctor.
“When I couldn’t reach him I had a gut feeling that something bad had happened.”
After the police found Mr Robert’s body, they asked his widow to formally identify him.
She said: “I just lay there and cuddled him — I’m still numb and it hasn’t really hit home.”
Mrs Roberts, who lives in Tyldesley, said that she was informed that her husband’s death came about from a bleeding chronic peptic ulcer.
The couple married three years ago on New Year’s Eve and although they had temporarily separated and were living apart, she said they were thinking of getting back together.
Mrs Roberts said: “It’s been a bad year — my father passed away and Karl and I were brought closer together because of that.
“Karl was always the life and soul of the party, he had a daughter and he was a fantastic dad.
“He was also a big Bolton Wanderers fan, so he would have loved it that they have managed to win at last.”
She added she has also been left frustrated as she has been unable to get into Mr Robert’s flat to sort out his things.
Bolton at Home, the owner of the property, has changed the locks — which they say is procedure until they have “legally checked the next of kin”.
Mrs Roberts said: “Now I have to pay for a marriage certificate to prove I’m his wife.”
A spokesperson for Bolton at Home said: “We appreciate that this is a difficult time for Mrs Roberts and we’ve been in regular contact with her.
“We have explained that the locks have to be changed to make a property secure and that we legally need to check next of kin.
“Arrangements have been made so that Mrs Roberts will have access to the property — subject to her providing required documentation.”
