Bolton's First Bus depot in Great Lever named one of best in country
DRIVING a bus is perhaps not the most glamorous of professions.
And it is certainly not something you might associate with Hollywood — unless you were thinking of the movie Speed.
But First Bus staff in Bolton are set for a taste of the high life — after their depot in Weston Street was nominated for a Bus Oscar.
Judges in this year’s UK Bus Awards were impressed by the team spirit at the depot, as well as its “green credentials”.
Matt Rawlinson, business manager for First in Bolton, said: “We are very proud to be nominated for this prestigious national award. It is all down to the hard work of our staff and is a culmination of 12 months of determined effort to improve our bus services for our customers and local communities.
“We are looking forward to travelling down to London to attend this awards event and fingers crossed we return home with the big prize.”
Bolton’s fleet of new environmentally friendly buses is fitted with high-tech engines which significantly reduce CO2 emissions.
All vehicles are also installed with DriveGreen, a system which tells the driver how to save reduce fuel consumption while on the road.
Bolton is consistently in the top 10 per cent of best-performing First depots for managing emissions. The depot was also praised for forming partnerships within the local community which includes working with the fire service and police.
Youngsters from St Joseph’s RC Primary School was also invited to visit the depot as part of a school project.
The awards, open to all UK bus companies, culminate in a glitzy event at a top London hotel on November 19.
