Lucky escape for driver as car goes up in flames on M61
A MAN had a lucky escape when his car went up in flames on the motorway.
Firefighters were called to deal with the Ford Focus, which caught fire when the driver was on the M61 Northbound near Watergate Lane in Farnworth at about 2pm.
The male driver was unaware that his car had caught fire and only realised when fellow drivers signalled for him to pull over.
He stopped on the hard shoulder and got out of the car before the fire spread — completely destroying the vehicle.
Fire crews from Farnworth and Eccles both attended and were able to put the fire out using hoses and breathing apparatus.
Eccles Crew Commander, Baz Hulme said: “The driver did the right thing getting out of the vehicle quickly and it was good that other drivers signalled to him.
“It is also important that when people pull into the hard shoulder they stay on the other side of the crash barriers for safety reasons.”
