Centre for children in danger of dropping out of school opens in Farnworth
A NEW school has opened to help Bolton’s young people who are in danger of dropping out of school.
The Lighthouse Group (TLG) Centre in Frederick Street, Farnworth, will specialise in getting young people who have failed to settle in school back into mainstream education.
TLG is a national organisation and has worked with The Well, Farnworth Baptist Church, to establish the school.
MP for Farnworth, Yasmin Qureshi, together with representatives from the church and TLG attended the opening alongside young people and the families it had already helped.
Helen Bradbury, who is family liaison officer and wife of the Church Minister, John Bradbury, said: “The centre is about giving extra help to pupils who for various reason are not engaging with their education.
“We are very pleased with the centre, which opened in the summer, at the end of the school year, and it is transforming lives.”
The centre works with schools, who refer children to it for intensive support with the curriculum and pastoral care.
Anxiety problems prevented Oliver Hirst, aged 12, a bright youngster, attending Canon Slade.
The school recommended the TLG Centre to his family.
He said: “I really enjoy coming to the centre and now I go to school once a week and look forward to seeing my friends. I used to worry about going to school before and if it wasn’t for this centre, I would still be quite nervous about going to school.”
His proud mum, Philippa, aged 41, who lives with her family in Breightmet, added: “Canon Slade has been incredibly supportive throughout. I was home schooling him, but now he is back in school for one day a week, his confidence and self-esteem has improved.
“This centre has made a big difference to him. It is a relaxed, friendly place and it stops you from feeling isolated.”
The TLG Centre works closely with the child’s school to personalise a curriculum and plan to get children back into school.
Ms Qureshi said: “Education is the best thing a child can get.”
