Thug rips Careline pendant from 92-year-old woman's neck in violent robbery
A “WICKED” thug ripped a 92-year-old woman’s alarm pendant from her neck while demanding she hand over cash during a terrifying robbery.
When he found the woman sitting in her living room, he grabbed her care line pendant from her neck and violently shook her while demanding cash.
He then took her purse containing a small amount of money and fled towards Birch Road.
The woman was taken to hospital as a precaution and kept in for observation.
The man is described as white and was wearing dark clothing with his face covered.
Police chiefs condemned the robbery as “wicked” and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Neighbours said last night they were “shocked and sickened” by the attack and say they are doing all they can to help the police catch the thug.
Detective Sergeant Lee Shaw said: “To break into the home of a 92-year-old woman is bad enough, but to then physically attack this woman — who is clearly vulnerable and has no capacity to defend herself — is reprehensible and the actions of a desperate coward.
“He has subjected this woman and her family to a completely unnecessary and frightening ordeal for the sake of just a few pounds.
“I want anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have seen something to come forward.
“I am confident someone will know who has done this and I want the associates and friends of this person to think about what he has done and tell us who he is.
“There is no room for loyalty in crimes as wicked as this and even the criminal fraternity will be appalled that someone can stoop so low.
“Next time it could be your mother or grandmother and we want to ensure justice is done for this woman and her family so if you do know anything please contact us in complete confidence.”
The robbery has shocked and frightened members of the community.
Neighbours are now rallying round to help the victim and help catch the person responsible and a collection has been started.
Shirley Fewtrell, aged 32, said: “We have all been left sickened by what has happened. To target a 92-year-old lady in her own house is shocking and upsetting.
“We have started a collection to show that the community does care and that we do look out for each other.
“If we don’t have a feeling of community then we have lost everything. This was a vicious robbery on a lady in her own home.
“I will give her my number and let her know that she can ring me at any time of the day or night.”
Her partner, Jonathan Croke, aged 32, added: “I will see if I can help tighten up security for her.
“We have all been speaking to each other and are giving police information about CCTV in the area and which people have it.
“Everybody here knows everybody else and I did see somebody I didn’t recognise acting suspiciously so I have reported it to the police. Anybody who saw something or can help should contact the police.”
Ward councillor Liam Irving said: “It’s absolutely disgusting that someone would do such a thing to someone so vulnerable. This lady must have been terrified and I hope the police catch the villain who has done this.”
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 5608, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
Anybody who would like to contribute to the collection should email email@example.com
