Teacher runs clubs to help Bolton's youngsters improve their English and maths
A BOLTON teacher is spearheading learning clubs across the town aiming at helping children aged from eight to 11 get to grips with maths and English.
Sue Greenwood, from Smithills, has been recruited by The Plus Club.
It was established in Kent and Northern Ireland, helping youngsters prepare for 11-plus exams.
The company has recently expanded into other non-11 plus regions, including Bolton, according to Mrs Greenwood, because of its success in helping to develop confident young learners who can find solutions to problems in class.
Classes are being launched at Markland Hill Tennis Club on Mondays, Horwich Resource Centre on Tuesdays and at Bromley Cross Village Hall on Thursdays, and are targeted at Year Four children, who will undergo an hour of tuition, and Year Fives, for two hours.
Mrs Greenwood said: “The organisation has been up and running for three years, and its main objective is to provide extra tuition for maths and English in a fun way.”
The 42-year-old has a background teaching at Brandwood Street and Church Road primary schools in Bolton, Claypool in Horwich, and Anderton Primary School, and as a primary education consultant in the Manchester borough of Trafford.
She added: “The idea is to provide an affordable way of giving children that little bit of extra help which they may not be able to get in a class of 35 children.
“Chiefly the thing that drew me towards this was that the children spend their time developing skills to learn in a fun way, which to me was absolutely refreshing.”
Although one of the by-products of their work is that youngsters may get better SATs results, Mrs Greenwood said that was not the primary objective of the classes.
She added: “It is not necessarily about SATs results.
“It’s more to do with helping a much smoother transition to secondary school.
“Instead of youngsters having to have booster classes in Year Six, we can nip things in the bud a year or two sooner, and there won’t be all that cramming in the final year of primary school. As a result the children will have a much more enjoyable experience in Year Six."
