THE victim of a brutal attack was left with a broken eye socket and jaw when he was punched in the face in Bolton town centre.
The 24-year-old is still unable to eat properly after the attack, which happened at 4.10am on September 15 and may need further operations to treat his broken jaw.
He was out with a friend and walking along Bank Street, looking for somewhere to have a drink when they passed a group of three men who they have never met before.
One of the thugs squared up to the victim and punched him in the face, knocking him to the floor, unconscious.
His friend tried to help – but was also attacked.
Passersby witnessed what was happening and ran to help, while the attacker and his friends fled.
Det Con Dave Fox said: "This young man was enjoying a night out with his friend when he was attacked.
"Such was the ferocity of this attack that he has already had one operation on his jaw and may need another as he is still unable to eat normal foods.
"This sort of unprovoked violence is totally unacceptable and the offender needs to be caught."
The main attacker was white, about 5ft 10in tall, medium build with tanned skin and stubble. He was wearing a white T-shirt with orange stripes and dark coloured jeans.
Police have arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, and he has been bailed to a date in November.
