MICHAEL Ward’s wife Mary Rose, the mother of his three children, says her six-year-old daughter keeps asking her ‘why did that man do it to daddy?’

Mrs Ward was speaking after Adaq Hussain was sentenced. She said: “What happened on that night you wouldn’t do it to an animal. I go against violence, and my husband was never a violent man and Hussain should never have done what he did.

“I was happy Hussain was sentenced in one way, but I wasn’t happy in another way because my husband will be like this for the rest of his life and he will be out of prison in less than 20 years.”

Since the incident Mrs Ward has tried to explain to her husband what had happened — but as she admits it is difficult She said: “My baby boy Michael was only two months old when my husband went into hospital last year, but he has no memory of him.”

Mr Ward, who is currently being cared for in the Maples Rehabilitation Centre, will eventually be allowed home but Mrs Ward knows his care will be round-the-clock.

She added: “I’ll have to cope. I am used to it, I go to see my husband every day. I have family for babysitters You have to cope don’t you?

“I go and pray for my husband every day in the hope he will improve, but he can’t wash himself and can't feed himself.

“I have to do everything for him. Doctors are not expecting that his condition will improve.”
