Market Place offers free parking on night of Christmas lights switch-on
SHOPPING centre bosses have given an early Christmas present to customers — free parking.
On one of the biggest nights for Bolton this year, when the town centre lights are switched on in a star-studded event next Monday, The Market Place is allowing people to park for free, between 4pm and 8.30pm, 30 minutes after the shopping centre closes.
The big switch on will play a starring role in a special edition of flagship BBC programme The One Show, which will be broadcast live from Bolton.
Market Place manager Rod Neasham said: “We support promotions and events that the council runs — like the switch on — to encourage shoppers into the town centre. We strive to work with the council whenever we can.”
Matt Baker and Alex Jones, presenters of The One Show, will be pedalling into town to be part of the huge event.
The duo will be visiting as part of the show’s Rickshaw Challenge for BBC Children In Need.
It is an eight-day challenge that will see a group of riders pedalling a rickshaw around the clock to cover approximately 700 miles.
The Christmas lights switch on will start at 6pm, with The One Show airing from 7pm to 7.30pm.
Matt and Alex, along with a mystery celebrity, yet to be announced, will be there as the switch is flicked.
Bolton Council leader Cllr Cliff Morris said: “We’re really excited to welcome Matt, Alex and all the young riders to Bolton. We’d like to urge as many people as possible to come to the switch on and be part of the live broadcast.”
Until January 10, parking at three multi-storey car parks — Deane Road, the Octagon and Topp Way — will be free after 3pm. Those car parks will also be free on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
