A COUNCILLOR has continued the tradition of marking Lancashire Day by presenting the Mayor of Bolton with a red rose.

Cllr John Walsh has no doubts over whether his home town falls under Greater Manchester or Lancashire — he is sticking to his Lancashire roots.

Cllr Walsh read the Lancashire Proclamation to Cllr Colin Shaw and Dee Shaw, Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton, in the town hall to mark Lancashire Day, which fell on Wednesday, November 27.

He then presented a red rose — the symbol of Lancashire — to Cllr Shaw.

Bolton was moved to Greater Manchester in 1974 but Cllr Walsh disagrees with new border.

Cllr Walsh, who is a member of Friends of Real Lancashire, said: “I am a Lancastrian brought up in Lancashire. The importance of the history should not be overlooked.

“Friends of Real Lancashire worked hard to keep the hearts of Lancashire. It is right that we should remember our history. I am proud of being a Lancastrian. History can’t be unwritten by a boundary. I still put Bolton, Lancashire, when I write my address.”
