Amir Khan hosted a sell-out fundraising dinner to help victims of the Philippines’ typhoon disaster.

The event, held at the Hilton Hotel in Bradford, raised more than £83,000 for the national appeal.

The Bolton boxer said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support from the community and hope to raise thousands for the Typhoon Haiyan Appeal.

“I’m also honoured to be working with Islamic Relief, such a good cause.”

And a Bolton town centre pub is hosting a two-day fundraising event to support the victims of the typhoon.

Bands will perform at the Dog and Partridge in Bank Street on Friday and Saturday.

Landlord Neil Piper said: “I was watching the news unfold of the devastation following Typhoon Haiyan and felt I had to do something to help, even though I can’t get over there myself.

“The music community has been overwhelmingly supportive and we managed to fully book the event within just a few days.”

The 175mph winds ripped through the Philippines in early November, killing more than 5,000 people and leaving many more starving and homeless.

According to UN estimates, the total count of people affected by the typhoon is 13 million.

Mindee Hutchinson, who is of Fillipino descent and head of the Rock It! music project for young people, has been recruited to help with the concert.

“There is a large Filipino community in Bolton, many of whom work caring for other residents, and almost all have been affected by the disaster in some way,” she said.

“It is important to do something now while the disaster is fresh in people’s minds, to ensure those affected are not forgotten about as the news headlines fade.”

Don Blake is at the top of Friday’s line-up, with Duke01 and Furious P closing the night with an hour-long set on the second evening after a performance from local band Blackjack Casino.

Ye it's a good thing he has done, but surely the amount of money that was spent hiring the Hilton and the food that was served could of been donated instead? With pledges alongside? I find it ludicrous that celebrities are sitting down eating posh food when the people over there just want the basics.
