THIEVES stole £400 worth of Christmas decorations from outside a house.

Alf Paynter of Avonhead Close, Horwich, set up a big festive scene in his garden on Tuesday evening — which included two artificial trees and several sets of lights.

But the next morning he discovered the two trees had been stolen, along with two sets of lights.

The thieves also cut the plugs off some remaining lights, rendering them useless.

The grandfather, who manages a multi-storey car park in Bolton town centre, said that he was “gutted”.

He added: “We have always enjoyed making a big deal out of Christmas and we really wanted the place to look great.

“My 12-year-old grandson has autism and we wanted him to enjoy the lights and the trees.

“But now these people have spoilt our Christmas. It makes me feel sick to think that people could do that and there are no other words to describe them except scum.”

The two artificial trees were bought for £139 each and the two sets of “icicle lights” that were taken cost Mr Paynter £60 each.

The remaining set of lights is also now useless, following the damage. It is not the first time the 57-year-old has suffered from a Christmas crime. Two years ago Mr Paynter’s lights were cut and ruined by vandals.

He said: “I can’t understand why people would do it. I haven’t done anything to anybody. Maybe these people just get a kick out of ruining people’s Christmas or were jealous of our lights.”

Despite the setback, Mr Paynter is determined to enjoy the festive period with his family. He said: “Why should I let them win?” Police are investigating the theft and officers have been to visit the property with a forensic team.

A spokesman said: “This is an ongoing investigation and if anyone has information about what has happened, they are encouraged to call us on 101.”
