A NEW game in which players are challenged to ‘Beat the Binmen’ has been developed by students at Bolton University.

The game was produced by sports students as part of a competition to encourage fellow students to recycle.

The competition was run by Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority (GMWDA) to help improve recycling levels.

As a way of tackling low recycling levels among young people, GMWDA teamed up with the university to get students to design a recycling game.

The students were given seven weeks to design an original game which could be used across Greater Manchester.

In total there were six teams who each had to present their ideas to three judges.

Each team had 10 minutes to present their game and were given five minutes for questioning.

The teams were judged on the originality of their idea, promotion of recycling, whether it was age appropriate, ease of transportation and whether it could be made.

Judge Cllr Martin Donaghy from Bolton Council said: “The competition between students was great to see and the different ideas which each team came up with really showed how much work they had put into the project.

“Each team did such a great job at integrating learning with an interactive game.”

Anthony Rollinson and Dean Chester won £100 each.
