THE Christmas spirit was alive at Rivington and Blackrod School when pupils decided to celebrate the festive season with the community.

Young people at the Horwich school hosted a Christmas party by putting on a seasonal spread and entertainment.

There was home-made Christmas food, performances by the music and performing arts departments as well as a student magician and a personal appearance by Father Christmas and his helpers.

Invited guests included residents of local care homes and members of the senior citizens community groups, including Horwich Resource Centre, the Widows Club and the Luncheon Club from St John’s Methodist Church.

Guests also included local councillors and members of the Old Rivingtonians Association and school governors.

The party was funded by Horwich Rotary Club.

The idea behind the gathering was to bridge the generation gap and showcase the work of young people at the establishment.

Pupils prepared and served food, decorated the hall and provided drama and musical performances.

Carols were sung and magic tricks were performed at each table.

Headteacher Tony Purcell said: “The community Christmas party provides an excellent opportunity for the school to reach out to its local community.

“Our students and staff work tirelessly to make the event a success and we thoroughly enjoy having all of our guests come into school.

“Thank you to the Horwich Rotary Club for helping us to fund this event and all staff and students who make this possible.”
