A TEACHER has appeared in court charged with a series of sex offences relating to a teenage pupil.

Andrew Welsh, of Highbank, Atherton, is charged with six counts of sexual activity with a girl while abusing a position of trust.

The 35-year-old maths teacher wore a grey suit and waistcoat to Bolton Magistrates Court, along with a checked tie.

He spoke only to confirm his name, address and and to acknowledge that he understood his bail conditions.

Welsh, who taught in a Bolton secondary school, is alleged to have engaged in sexual activity with the 16-year-old girl between May 25 and July 19. He was arrested on July 19.

He entered no pleas today.

Peter Hayes, defending, requested the case be adjourned for legal reasons.

Ian Hilton, chairman of the bench, said: “We are going to adjourn your case until January 29. You will be on bail.”

He was granted conditional bail.

He was ordered not to contact witnesses, surrender his passport, live at his home address, not be left unattended with people under aged 18 without the presence of another adult and to attend Bolton Police Station on a Monday and Friday.

He will next appear at Bolton Magistrates Court on January 29.
