AN A-level student is on track to achieve her singing ambitions after producing her first CD — in her bedroom.

Beth Tomlin, aged 17, who goes under the name of Beth Jo, used nothing more than her iPhone and computer to produce Home, a nine-track debut CD, which is now on sale.

The teenager, from Blackrod, said she has been singing for as long as she can remember, taking part in local stage productions from the age of seven, and has aspirations to become a professional singer-songwriter.

Some of her original songs are on iTunes, but this is the first time she has produced a CD, using her bedroom as a makeshift recording studio.

Beth said: “Producing the CD this way is much cheaper than a recording studio.

“I wrote the songs on holiday in France and started recording them when I got back using an iPhone 3 and the software Garageband, which I just figured out how to use.”

Garageband gives users a virtual recording studio, as well as backing tracks and instruments, something which would have cost hundreds of pounds a few years ago using more traditional means.

Beth’s sister, Laura, aged 15, plays the keyboard on some of the tracks and friends Amy Whistlecroft and Josie Hull did the artwork.

The inspiration for the songs has come from the hit US series Supernatural.

Beth, a student at Winstanley College, said: “Everyone was talking about the series on the website Tumblr and my songs are based on the characters. But I want people to be able to relate to it in their own lives and my friends said they can, rather than just thinking about the series.”

The teenager came sixth in the UK in a competition to support singer Gabrielle Aplin.

Beth does not have any plans to go down The X Factor route and wants to work her way to becoming a traditional singer-songwriter.

“I am hoping to do some gigs at university. I am always singing — at lunchtimes at college and at work — and do want to take it further.

“I was gutted when I did’t get to support Gabrielle Aplin, although coming sixth was still good.”

Beth is hoping to bring out another CD, with Amy playing the drums.
