Raising a glass on her 100th birthday

The Bolton News: Nora Winstanley has reached her century Nora Winstanley has reached her century

A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER has celebrated her 100th birthday in style.

Nora Winstanley marked her centenary surrounded by family and friends, who had travelled as far away as Hampshire, Leicester and Botswana — where her son Gordon lives — to be with her.

Born in Bolton as Nora Arthur she married twice, firstly to Frank Tattum and later to William Winstanley who she moved to Blackrod to live with.

During her working life she owned her own shop called the Hat Box in St George’s Road, before working at fashion store The Princess in Great Moor Street.

After William died she went to live in Cleveleys on the Fylde coast.

But eight years ago Nora returned to Bolton where she now lives independently in a flat in Westpark Avenue, Heaton.

Daughter Sue, one of her three children, said the family celebration was lovely. She added: “She was thrilled to receive her birthday card from the Queen — it was probably the most important event.

“Although she almost missed it because she didn’t hear the postman when he was trying to deliver it.

“My mum keeps saying she can’t believe she’s 100.

“She’s doing very well.”
