COMMUTERS faced serious delays on the A666 Blackburn Road due to United Utilities (UU) roadworks.
Frustrated motorists were caught in traffic jams as the road became gridlocked between Halliwell Road and Moss Bank Way during rush hour.
A spokesman for UU confirmed that the company were carrying out sewer repairs on the busy junction, and that temporary traffic lights were being used.
It is not known when the work will be completed.
Angry drivers contacted The Bolton News' Twitter account to vent their frustration.
Tony Ryan tweeted from @tony29: "Idiotic unattended United Utilities sewer repair with temp lights at Sharples on A666. No notice 6 mile tailback to Farnworth."
