A THIRD of Bolton’s schools saw their GCSE results improve by as much as 20 per cent, figures out today show.

The performance of each school in last summer’s GCSE examinations has been officially revealed with the publication of the secondary school league tables.

Headline figures show six schools posted an increase in the numbers of children gaining the benchmark of five or more A* to C GCSEs including English and maths, with 12 recording a dip in results and no change compared to the previous year’s results in four schools.

But overall Bolton’s performance was above the national average, with 60.7 per cent of children achieving the standard compared to 59.2 per cent.

Bolton Council’s director of adult and children’s services, Margaret Asquith, said: “Bolton’s young people have once again done themselves proud.

“We have improved on last year and we are ahead of the national average, which is a real achievement for all involved. Over the last few years we have seen improvements and we are delighted to see that level of achievement continued this year.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to say well done again to all of our young people who collected their results last summer and wish them the very best for the future. The council is dedicated to working with all schools across the borough to support pupils in achieving the best possible outcomes.”

Top of the state schools was Bolton Muslim Girls’ School.

Results rose by 17 per cent to 86 per cent of girls achieving the standard expected. Acting headteacher Idrish Patel said: “I feel extremely pleased and privileged to lead a school of such a high calibre.

“Our success year on year is due to the hard work, dedication and support of our learners, staff, parents/carers, governors, Bolton Muslim Welfare Trustees, the local authority and the community.

“Had it not been for their support we wouldn’t have been in such a prestigious position.”

Yakub Patel, chairman of governors, added: “I would like to congratulate the learners, staff, parents and everyone associated with the school directly or indirectly for such fantastic results.”

The school which recorded the highest rise in results was Kearsley Academy, where they soared by 20 per cent to 51 per cent of children achieving the benchmark.

Nigel Jepson, headteacher, said: “The excellent results achieved by our students reflect the tremendous improvement in standards and achievement that has taken place over the three years since we opened.

“I am confident that even greater improvement will take place in the forthcoming years.

“The staff really care for the students in terms of the quality of teaching and learning that is provided and the students always respond with enormous enthusiasm.”

St James’ CE School in Farnworth, also recorded a huge rise in results. They went up 16 per cent to 77 per cent of children leaving with the expected grades.
