SWEET success greeted a youngster who smashed his fundraising target after holding a charity bake sale in the town centre.

Six-year-old Charlie Simmons-Davis had hoped to raise £50 when he took to the Radcliffe bandstand to sell cakes for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

But the Chapelfield Primary pupil raised £335.36 — and the total is still rising.

The day got even better for Charlie, who wants to be a fireman and volunteer RNLI worker, when a fire crew from Whitefield station stopped off to pick up some snacks.

Father Chris, of Charter Avenue, said: “Considering Charlie only wanted to raise £50 this is an incredible achievement and we are hoping the final total will be more like £400.

“He had a massive number of people coming over to see what was going on and one lady even gave him an RNLI pen, which he was very impressed with.”

Chris added: “When a passing fire engine pulled over to buy some cakes, Charlie was over the moon about that.

“We can’t put into words how proud we are of him. We are also so grateful to local businesses Brooke's Cupcakes, Cherella's Delight Bites, Sugarby and Flour Patch who donated cakes for him to sell.”

The youngster became interested in the RNLI after noticing his uncle, who regularly visits Cornwall, had a model lifeboat on display in his living room.

Charlie has children’s RNLI membership and held the cake sale as part of national fundraising initiative SOS Day, which officially took place last Friday.

The family will travel to a nearby RNLI station in Blackpool or Lytham St Anne’s to present the money, which will fund the organisation’s work across the country.
