A STUDENT nurse from Farnworth will star in a new television programme filmed at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

The series, called Student Nurses: Bedpans and Bandages, will be screened on ITV at 8pm tonight and will give an insight into what it takes to become a nurse in the 21st century.

The first episode tonight will follow three trainee nurses, including first-year student Alistair Soutar — of Broadway in Farnworth — who previously worked as a carpet fitter.

Mr Soutar, who is currently studying at the University of Salford, said: “I decided to get involved with the programme because I felt it was important to promote to positive work carried out by nursing staff.

“I have always wanted to be a nurse but I waited until I was a bit older because I knew I probably wasn’t mature enough when I was 18 to deal with some of the stuff you face every day as a nurse.

“It was a fantastic experience to take part in the programme and it meant I got the chance to do things you wouldn’t normally get to do as a first year — such as watching surgery.”
