SPOOKY security footage appears to have revealed a spirit of a different kind at Bolton’s oldest pub.

The freaky film appears to show a peculiar presence at one end of the bar at Ye Olde Man and Scythe in Churchgate.

The figure flashes into view before quickly disappearing.

Footage was found by manager, Tony Dooley, who was woken on Friday morning just after 6am by the sound of breaking glass.

He noticed that the pub’s CCTV cameras had mysteriously stopped working and when he checked back over the film, he was shocked to see the dark figure come into view.

The 35-year-old, who only took over the pub, where he now lives, in December, said: “It has really shaken me up, look at my hand, it is shaking just talking about it — this is where I live.

“I have never really believed in ghosts or anything like that before, but I think I am starting to now.

“At first I thought someone had broken in, but I thought it was weird that the cameras stopped working, and then I watched it back and saw the figure.”

The Olde Man and Scythe is the fourth oldest pub in Britain and has long been rumoured to be haunted.

It is thought that James Stanley, the seventh Earl of Derby, has haunted the premises since he was executed outside the building for his part in the Bolton massacre.

The Royalist commander is thought to have spent his last few hours in Ye Olde Man and Scythe and the chair he was sat in remains in the pub today.

Regular customer Greg Penkethman, aged 24, said: “I’ve always been sceptical about ghosts but after seeing the video i’m not so sure — it won’t stop me coming in for a drink though.”
