A MAN who smuggled cannabis into a Bolton police cell was caught when he took it from his sock and started to eat it, a court heard.

Bolton Magistrates Court was told Khius Austin was arrested for an unrelated offence on January 30, searched and put into a cell.

Several hours later, officers went to investigate a smell of the drug coming from Austin’s cell.

The 36-year-old, from Kenyon Lane, Moston, had smuggled in a single snap bag of cannabis in his sock.

The court heard Austin had a lengthy criminal record, including for possession of cannabis.

Austin pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis and failing to surrender to court.

The case was adjourned for sentencing until March 19 to allow reports to be prepared.
