THE memory of a baby girl who died at the age of just 15 weeks after being born with a complex heart condition has inspired a charity single.

Lagan Katherine Anne Grant lost her battle in April 2011 and her parents Carren Bell and Barry Grant set up Lagan’s Foundation in her name to help and support families whose children are born with complex congenital heart defects (CHD).

Now local rock and indie band, The Vicious Circle, will release a single to raise money for the charity, which has grown rapidly since it was established.

It helps families across the country and medical professionals also refer parents to the charity.

Miss Bell, who lives with her family — including Ceridwen, aged 11, and one-year-old Lochlyn — in Horwich, said: “The band are very popular and have spent weeks designing, writing and recording for the release.”

The song will be played for the first time at a music festival to be held in the area and will be available for download.

She added: “I haven’t been emotional yet, because I haven’t seen the video or heard the finished single. I want to experience it as the same time as everybody else.”

The idea for a single came at a fundraising ball for Lagan’s Foundation, where a member of the band was acting as DJ. Miss Bell, aged 34, mentioned the idea of a charity single in passing.

“It all started from there, and the single is coming out in March,” she said, “A member of the band also has someone in the family who has CHD, so it was personal for them as well.”

The charity runs training courses — backed by Alder Hey Hospital — for volunteers to support families with children born with heart conditions and feeding difficulties to give parents a break for a few hours a week.

Miss Bell said: “We are there to provide support and to signpost families. We are not a medical charity, there are already medical professionals for that. We take the strain off families.”

She added: “I am not surprised at the number of people asking for help, because there wasn’t a charity like this.”

The charity single is the band’s first since they formed last year.

Pete Owen, who plays rhythm guitar/vocals, has experience of CHD after his cousin lost a daughter to the condition.

He said: “Not a day goes by that we don’t miss her.

“I had no idea how big a problem this condition was, you always think it won’t happen to you.

“The song is quite emotional and moving.

“This is something I want to be involved in and every penny from the download will go to the charity.”

The charity single is called Overtaking Time will be launched on March 7. For further details visit lagans.org.uk or search for Lagan’s Foundation on Facebook.
