THE first pictures have been released of the planned transformation of the historic vaulted basement in the Market Place shopping centre.

Owners of the complex Moorgarth have applied to transform the Victorian vaults on the bottom floor of the centre into restaurants, bars and shops.

The company has already received permission to build a new nine-screen cinema within the current car park, and operators The Light Cinema was confirmed last month.

Chief executive of Moorgarth, Tim Vaughan, said this next planning application showed their commitment to Bolton town centre.

He said: “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the Bolton community and help breathe life back into these historic vaults and enable the population of Bolton and outside to appreciate the delights of Bolton’s iconic heritage into the future.

“The addition of family friendly restaurants, licensed bars and, of course, our recently approved nine-screen independently operated cinema in this beautiful building is a fresh and exciting way to create an event-based destination.

“It will operate during the day and night offering people of all ages a place to enjoy some quality time with friends and family in a wonderful environment.”

The proposed works include creating direct escalator access into the vaults from the ground floor main entrance from Corporation Street, new scenic glass lifts to all floors and the addition of a range of restaurants at first floor level, in addition to those in the vaults.

A council spokesman said: “We were aware that this phase two application was going to be submitted and we are aware of the excitement that this scheme is generating within Bolton.

“It will now go through the planning process and a decision will be made in due course.”

Looks promising, but to get customers in, we need the rest of the town smartening-up, there's too many closed shops and stores.

If Bolton Council have a town centre manager, they should be looking for new companies to help rejuvenate the town centre, try a spell of lower business rates as an encouragement.

I remember the 'Vaults' as they call them, you could access these at the rear and down some steps by the side of the river before they renovated the market, I often wondered what they used them for later, I didnt think this version as we have at the moment would last long, as it seems with everything new these days.
These plans at least have some varied aspects to the place to suit everyone but only time will tell.
If Bolton had free parking (with time limits of course) it would more likely attract many others from outside Bolton who wish to shop instead of the beggars and instrumentalists, saw a bloke the other day singing into a paper cup and swaying about, singing something that no one could understand (it was quite funny but also pathetic)

Why would Capppuccinos want to move from a prime position at the Knowsely Street entrance of the Market Place, to the vaults under the old Market Hall? They would lose a lot of passing trade.

So why has my thumbs up gone from +7 to ZERO whilst the person above my original comment, with whom I am greeing with is now on +9? Or is it the usual idiot playing with their macro program to try to get rid of me from the website? I am going with the latter - so apologies for all concerened this is just pathetic attempt by ONE individual who has a total gruidge against everything i write! Seating needs to be flexible to allow for parties of all sizes. Then there's parking who is going to visit a cinema in Bolton town centre and pay for parking when they can go to the Rebok and park for free.
Sorry not all Bolton is feeling excited.

But there is free parking uin the side streets behind Bridge Street and also free parking in the multi-storey on School Street after 3pm and at the weekends - remember the Market Place car-park will probably not be there for much longer because of the cinema that is moving in its space!

So parking is definitely not an issue, and I hope you are not condoning drink-driving, by the way! ;-)

It would be great if Bolton could be a great place to shop, eat and enjoy just as it was when I came to live here 33 years ago. It will take time but we need to be positive and supportive.
