FROM Where’s Wally to Oompa Loompas, children at St Peter’s Smithills Dean CofE School were full of ideas when they celebrated World Book Day.

Pupils at the school in Limefield Road, Smithills, got dressed up for the day and paraded their costumes in front of an assembley for the whole school.

They also took part in a book quiz, and listed their favourite books.

Christine Lancashire, headteacher at the school, said: “The costumes were magnificent — the effort which has gone into them has been incredible. It was a fantastic day.”

Alison Slater, English subject leader at the school, said: “It was a wonderful opportunity to bring books alive and to further inspire our children to develop a love for reading.”

Costumes on the day included characters from the Narnia chronology, The Statue of Liberty and Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz.

Activities have been taking place at schools across Bolton for World Book Day which is today.

Breighmet Library is inviting youngsters aged between four and 11 to get creative and create a character which could be straight from a children’s storybook.

The activity starts at 3.30pm and finishes at 6.30pm.
