A SCHEME to allow people to check whether their partner has a history of violence is being rolled out nationwide.

Clare’s Law was piloted in Greater Manchester two years ago after the death of Clare Wood, who was murdered by her former partner in 2009.

The scheme gives people the opportunity to apply for disclosure of an individual they are in a relationship with, or in a relationship with someone they know.

Bolton Coroner Jennifer Leeming was instrumental in the law's creation.

Since its introduction more than 100 people throughout Greater Manchester have applied for a disclosure.

Tony Lloyd, police and crime commissioner for Greater Manchester, said: “Clare’s law has made a tangible difference to the lives of women throughout Greater Manchester.

"The extension of the scheme on a national level should be regarded as a significant advancement for the rights of women in the UK.

“Locally, Greater Manchester Police is working closely with organisations such as Rape Crisis, Women’s Aid and Victim Support to ensure that women are able to feel safe in their own home.

"The national introduction of the scheme sends a clear message that violence in the home is not acceptable.”
