BOLTON Council is leading the first North West Adoption Week to find loving homes for 55 children in the borough.

Adopt North West, a collaboration between 22 local authorities, has kicked off its “you can adopt” campaign by busting misconceptions.

These include adopting a child regardless of whether you are single, over 50, already having biological children, are gay, are 21 and over, are in full time employment, from any religion or are not a homeowner.

The campaign hopes to find families for the 623 children currently awaiting adoption in the North West through television and radio adverts.

John Daly, assistant director for Children’s Services at Bolton Council, who is heading the campaign, said: “Adoption is an accessible option for almost all would-be parents in the North West and we are communicating that message to increase people’s knowledge about the process and invite them to consider adoption as an option.

“There are many reasons why people choose to adopt and whatever their circumstances, they should seriously consider it.”

Cllr Madeline Murray, cabinet member for looked after children, said: “There are many myths about adoption and that it’s hard to qualify and the process is long and complicated but this isn’t the case.

“Adopting a child is a very rewarding experience and the campaign aims to get more people to come forward to help children who need our help.”

Adopt North West has been established to make the adoption process faster and more straightforward for adults looking to adopt.
