Bolton's bowling greens facing the axe because of town hall budget cuts

The Bolton News: Bolton's bowling greens facing the axe because of town hall budget cuts Bolton's bowling greens facing the axe because of town hall budget cuts

BOWLING greens across Bolton could be closed as part of council cuts.

Town Hall bosses have laid out plans for working out which clubs might face the axe in a bid to save the local authority £20,000.

Chiefs say they currently spend £175,000 a year maintaining 28 greens and pavilions — but only get £17,039 in income from fees.

Around 1,500 bowlers used the greens in 2013, and the council has now agreed a “points system” to determine which ones will be closed.

But the news has been greeted with anger by Bolton’s crown green bowlers.

Christine Wareing, a member of Westhoughton Sports and Social Club, said her team plays matches at council-owned greens across the town.

She said: “I knew this was going to happen. Our club had a letter from Bolton Council wanting to know about our bowling green.

“They are taking everybody’s pleasure away — at Westhoughton Park the pavilion isn’t just used by bowlers. Pensioners go there to play dominos and cards.

“The council should leave the little man alone, and start at the top by cutting the fat cats’ wages.”

Cllr Nick Peel, the cabinet member for environmental services at the council, said it was not yet possible to say how many, or which, clubs will be affected, but a decision is expected by the end of the year.

He added: “We are going to base the decision around whether there is a double bowling green where one will suffice, and is there another green within a reasonable distance.

“The greens are expensive to run because it’s high maintenance to treat them properly.

“A third strand is whether there are voluntary groups that would be willing to take over the running of the club, where the alternative might be closure.

“It’s not the intention to just apply this bluntly — we will be speaking to ward councillors and any established bowling club concerned.”

  • There are currently more than 230 crown green bowling teams in Bolton in numerous leagues, including Bolton and District Bowling League, Bolton Mills Bowling League, Bolton Conservative Bolton League and Bolton Parks Vets Bowling League.
  • Every year it is estimated 1,470 bowlers use the council’s 28 greens.
  • There are traditionally two greens per club — one for the men and one for the ladies.

For God's sake, Bolton Council get a grip! It's Moss Bank Park's Animal World all over again - relatively small amounts of money which give much pleasure to many people. If we really are that strapped for cash then get a bit more creative - for example, take a couple of thousand off the salaries of each of the ten highest paid council employees, or sell another of those pictures which are gathering dust in the store rooms of the art gallery!

How I agree with every word you have written. Morris and his cronies should be ashamed of themselves, The pensioners who use these greens have on the whole worked all there lives and contributed to the Town, unlike the dross and illegals that are claiming every benefit they can . The council think nothing of spending £20,000 and more, on outreach workers ,and other non jobs within the Town Hall. Let us hope that every pensioner remembers what our Labour council are thinking of doing when it is time for the local elections. It is time the people of Bolton made a stand against such things happening.

Will Counc. Nick Peel be taking a cut in his expenses given that he will have reduced responsibilities?

Bolton Council need to open their eyes. They spend money on stupid things and then tell us that we must accept cuts. How many times has the Town Hall precinct been re-flagged or repaired, how much has it cost to introduce 20mph zones and road humps, how much is spent on tea/coffee and biscuits for councillors meetings. Is it not time to get rid of all these so called peoples representatives and elect people with some common sense?

If Bolton Council wants to save money begin with cutting the salaries of anyone being paid over £50,000 per year, dont pay councillors anything at all, not even expenses, begin the cuts within the Town Hall then perhaps the electorate might support cuts to essential services.

I read it, I should have quoted.

I have an idea... anyone getting close to PC should have comments quoted by all of us, they cannot kill the voices of us all.

Your statement wasn't even racist in the slightest... just true.

And yet the BN can write a report that is barefaced borderline PC and censor comments.

Anyway on topic... I think the voices here are all on the same page. We need to get out into town outside the town hall as a unit and do this. And I do not mean 20 people, I mean 1000's. White, black, green, pink, purple... ALL of us!

Any specific day we can agree on folks? We can be anon from the boards here, just turn up and make our voices of discontent heard.

As mentioned before the town hall is being refurbished at a cost to tax payers of 7 million pounds , surely among all the new desks, computers , kitchens etc the council can squeeze a few thousand from the suppliers to help support the bowling greens of the town !!!
How about asking the main contractor to sponsor this activity next year ? after all they are advertising their company all over the hoardings around the site maybe the could give something back in return .

The people who say we should have less Councillors to help fund the loss of Bowling Greens and Sporting facilities are right, because we have a lot of redundant Councillors. These Councillors are outside the Bolton Council Cabinet and has such have no say in anything, being told just which stance to take on any given subject and to toe the party line, or else.
What is the point of having these Councillors when they cannot snap the puppet strings? Unfortunately though all political parties are the same and we would be treated no differently no matter which party is in power within the Town Hall. Lots of comment makers on this site blame the present incumbents within the Town Hall for the demise of the Market Hall and the Fortnightly Bin collection, which in fact was the LibDems, so they are all the same. So yet again the people power should prevail, Cut councillors expenses and cut the number of Councillors.

Shame on this, unfit for purpose, Bolton council. Having destroyed the identity of this once proud Lancashire Town they now consider it acceptable to remove/degrade what is one of the meagre recreation facilities still available to the senior, indigenous, members of the Bolton community. I trust that my last comment will not be considered as racist by the Bolton News Politically Correct censors. Crown Green Bowling has, and still remains a passion in the North West, it promotes friendly rivalry, provides healthy exercise and in many cases much needed company. Bolton council should reconsider their responsibilities regarding the welfare of those members of an ageing community who have contributed, through work and taxation, much more than the parasitic individuals that are now prevalent in this town. Perhaps Councillor Morris, and his ilk, should give serious consideration to reducing the number of individuals on the “Council Gravy Train” thus providing a more economical, compact, and hopefully efficient decision making environment.

Why Can't the people who use these facilities pay £2.24 a week? That's the entire bill paid for........ Why can nobody come up with simple easy systems.

To play bowls, which is a leisure facility at the end of the day require a licence, even if the council subsidised it and made it £52 a year then nearly half the bill is paid.

For the council to save £20,000 it's £13 each per year.

Come on let's have a bit of common sense.
JustBecause

Serious idea, clearly some will not be able to afford it, so my idea is "sponsor" an OAP.

1500 individuals or businesses could sponsor people for say £10 giving them a yearly licence. The more money you sponsor the more facilities people are allowed to do, this would create community spirit as you can meet the person your sponsoring etc.....

I would be happy to chip into that, as long as every single penny went to the people.

Bolton council are you listening,,,,,,
