A DEANE community group which caters for adults with a range of disabilities is celebrating being open for six months.

The group, Our Place, Our Space, was set up in October by Margaret Gray to provide people with different disabilities a place to go to relax and take part in a range of activities.

Six months on, the group is going strong, with 40 members meeting every week at Pikes Lane Community Centre in Deane Road.

They take part in activities including pool, table football, quiz nights and pampering sessions.

Mrs Gray, aged 57, of Southfield Drive, Westhoughton, has volunteered for a number of projects in the past but decided she wanted to set up her own venture. She said: “I have been a volunteer for nine years, but this has been my own project and I am really pleased with how it is going.

“We started with just 11 members and already have got that up to 40 in six months.

“The adults who come to the centre have a range of issues including autism, Down’s syndrome and attention deficit disorder and it is really rewarding to be able to offer them a place to go, I love it.”

Mrs Gray and her 10 staff are all volunteers and so far she has been primarily funding the project herself through various fundraising events.

She is now hoping that local businesses may want to back the project in order for it to continue.
