The 87-year-old widower called 999 within minutes of being woken up and punched repeatedly in his face at his home in Longfield Road, Daubhill, in the early hours of August 3 last year.

Mr Worsley was taken to hospital but suffered bleeding in the brain as a result of the attack and died less than three weeks later on August 20 after suffering two major strokes.

His killer, Crompton, aged 24, of no fixed address, has been jailed for life for his murder, and must serve a minimum of 18 years in jail before being eligible for release.

This audio recording was played to the court during Crompton's trial and has now been released by Greater Manchester Police.
