A SCHOOL which had “serious weaknesses” has now been rated as good by inspectors — thanks to the “relentless determination” of the headteacher.

Washacre Primary School is now looking to the future after going from an Ofsted grade four — inadequate — in November 2012 to a grade two this week.

Inspectors reported that the Westhoughton school no longer required “significant improvement”.

Headteacher Jenny Haunch was singled out for praise for her being “relentless in her determination to improve the school”.

Inspectors stated: “She sets high expectations for pupils’ progress and behaviour and is effectively supported in these high expectations by leaders at all levels.”

They added: “The legacy of underachievement has been eradicated by good and outstanding teaching resulting in pupils’ rapid progress.”

The report draws to an end two troubled years for the troubled school.

In 2011 the school failed to post its results after children at the school had their SATs results cancelled following an investigation into how exams were conducted.

The results were annulled by the exam watchdog when irregularities came to light.

The following year it posted poor marks but last year it celebrated a huge leap in results with the number of children achieving the grades more than doubling.

And school inspectors found that standards are continuing to rise with even more children on track to reach above average standards this year — which is more remarkable given that children enter the school with skills and knowledge that is well below that typical for their age.

All areas were described as good, with children saying they enjoy school and take pride in their work.

An interim executive board is in place instead of a governing body, but said inspectors was providing “highly effective governance”.

Miss Haunch said: "I am delighted with this public acknowledgement of the progress Washacre Primary School has made.

“It is the result of over a years worth of hard work and dedication from the staff and Interim Executive Board.

“I would like to express my thanks to all of the staff and the children without whom this would not have been possible.

“I would also like to thank all of the parents for their unwavering support since I started at the school in September 2012.”
