A ROADSHOW for older people proved there is plenty to do for the over-50s in Bolton.

The event comes as new measures are being brought in to tackle the town centre’s reputation as a playground for young drinkers and make the area more family friendly.

More than 1,000 older people flocked to the Holiday Inn in Bolton town centre.

Event organiser, Declan Warburton, said: “If there have been grumbles about there not being enough for older people to do, then we certainly put them right.

“It has been an incredible success, we are over the moon. The highlight would have to be the fashion show, there was not an empty seat.”

An Elvis impersonator, a cooking demonstration and advice clinics were among the other attractions at the event.

The festivities kicked off at 10am and ran all the way through to the mid-afternoon, with all proceeds going towards local charity Kidz Together, which supports children with autism.

For some, including Freda Jones, the event presented an opportunity to not just have some fun but also to meet new people.

She said: “It’s been wonderful, we will be coming back next year for sure. I have enjoyed everything but in particular the fashion show.

“I would definitely recommend people over 50 come. There is so much on going on and they also give plenty of free advice.”

Ms Jones found a friend in fellow attendee Josie Williams, who said that the pair had forged what they hope will be a lasting friendship.

Mrs Williams said: “You get to chat to lots of people — we have only known each other an hour but we will now keep in touch as we live fairly close to each other.”
