A NEW PoundPub — which will serve half pints of beer for just £1 and pints for £1.50 — is set to open.

Here For Your Hospitality Ltd is set to convert Old Isaacs in Market Street, Atherton, into a cut-price watering hole.

Old Isaacs — formerly known as the Wheatsheaf — will be one of the first two pubs in the country, along with another in Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham, to be converted to the new concept.

Mike Wardell, a director of the Warrington-based chain, said the discount pricing policy had been trialled at Old Isaacs in recent months leading a transformation of its fortunes.

Under the plan, the PoundPub offers half a pint of lager for £1 and a pint for £1.50, in a move to build on the growing success of no-frills retailers.

Mr Wardell said: “The idea is to bring people back into the pub, and that is why George Osborne reduced the beer tax by a penny in the budget.

“If it is a success — like Poundland — we will roll it out to other sites.”

Mr Wardell, meanwhile, has brushed off suggestions from an alcohol awareness group worried that drink is already too cheap.

He said the pubs would cut their overheads to reduce the cost of the beer and there would be no Sky Sports subscription.
