A TEAM of fundraisers will take on the “mountainous” task of climbing Ben Nevis in aid of a disabled children’s charity.

The group of four will scale the country’s highest mountain, in Scotland, on June 7.

They will also complete a 20-mile bike ride and row one-mile of a loch to raise funds for Children’s Opportunity Group, based at Lowndes Street Nursery, Halliwell.

The money raised from the climb will be spent on a minibus.

The idea for the climb came from Emma Hargreaves, the owner of Aura beauty salon in Halliwell Road.

Miss Hargreaves’ lifelong friend Ailsa Pearcey has Down’s syndrome, and her mother, Nicola McGuiness, set up COG 35 years ago.

The group will include Miss Hargreaves’ friends Clare Morris, Simon Stone and Keith Laverty, none of whom have climbed before. They aim to raise between £3,000 and £4,000.

Miss Hargreaves, aged 37, of Over Hulton, said: “When I visited the COG premises, I couldn’t believe how few facilites they had. They deserve so much more, and that’s why we are doing this.”

Miss Pearcey, who is a public speaker, said she was grateful to Miss Hargreaves and the group. The 35-year-old, from Lostock, said: “It will have a great impact on young children and babies.”

Miss Hargreaves has organised a Family Fun Day at Bolton Golf Club in Lostock Park, Chorley New Road, Lostock, on Saturday.

Tickets cost £8.
