NEWS that the mythical court of King Arthur could be much closer to home than first thought has added extra drama and magic to an am-dram group’s next production.

Award-winning Walmsley Church Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society are bringing Camelot to life just weeks after a street in neighbouring Wigan became the focus of a media frenzy with national and local papers reporting that one of its streets was the most likely location of the legendary court.

And now the theatre company is inviting people to watch its musical and discover Arthur’s story which is surrounded by myth and folklore and one which continues to fascinate and intrigue today.

Nora Howcroft, director, said: “This news is heaven sent. The news that Camelot could have been based in a street in Wigan went viral, it was everywhere.

“We are staging the musical and people can find out all about the legend — we have the king, the queen, Merlin, the castle, the enchanted forest — the whole caboodle.

"Cornwall has always laid claim to the legend with Tintagel, and this news is so good for this area — it is heaven sent for us, we could not have dreamt of having publicity like this.

“It is really good news for the area.”

She added: “King Arthur continues to fascinate people today.”

The cast are busy rehearsing the musical for the opening night on April 28 and multi-awarding winning amateur dramatics actor Steve Benson is taking the lead role.

  • The show runs until May 3, with performances at 7.30pm at Parish Hall Theatre, Christ Church, Walmsley, For ticket information call 01204 305812.
