Former Great Lever chip shop owner hits back after zero hygiene rating accusation

The Bolton News: Former chip shop owner hits back after zero hygiene rating accusation Former chip shop owner hits back after zero hygiene rating accusation

THE former boss of a Bolton chip shop has hit back after the current owners suggested that the store’s food hygiene rating of zero was down to her.

Pauline Crompton, aged 65, and her business partner Joan Russell ran the chip shop, in Lever Street, Great Lever, for 25 years, under the name Pauline and Joan’s.

After The Bolton News contacted current owner Amjid Mirza following the award of a zero food hygiene score by the council’s inspector, he said the result was largely down to the previous owners.

Mr Mirza, who has renamed the takeaway A Star Chippy, said: “The place was being run a certain way for 25 years and we had only been here a few months when the inspector came.”

Mrs Crompton, aged 65, said she was “disgusted” when she read the comments. She said: “It was just the easy thing for him to do to blame the two old dears.”

She said that the business had last been awarded three stars for food hygiene during her ownership.

She added: “We never recieved any warnings or anything. We cleaned every day and threw things away — I think this is just a cop out.

"We established a good reputation over 25 years and I would like that restored.”

However, Mr Mirza said he stands by his comments.

He added: “We were only here for a few weeks before the inspector came and we were doing exactly the same things as the previous owners, so who else would you blame?”

@Amjid Mirza: IF the place was dirty/unhygienic when you took over (doubt it) you should have got the place up to scratch BEFORE opening for business - idiot.

Tip for future ref don't clean your grills with dirty wire brushes in dirty water and then not wipe it over and stick a burger on it with a customer watching... I hope the poor soul who ate that wasnt ill from it

Wonder if the inspectors treated the "old dears" differently but surely the new owners should have made sure that they complied with all hygiene regulations before opening given all the headline news recently? Bit like a school kid being found out doing something they shouldn't and then saying what about them...

If you don't clean or keep on top of things properly, it only takes a little while for the grime to build up - especially somewhere like a chippy.

I very much doubt that the hygiene inspector would be more lenient with the two "old dears". Its more like the new owner has been found out, and is trying to crawl out of, what was his responsibilities.

The current owners of the chip shop should not have opened for business until they were satisfied that it met all the criteria for food hygiene. I noticed in the original reports that some current owners always previous owners and also claimed not to know who they were!!!!!!!!! YOU are responsible for YOUR premises. Nobody else.

Problem is in Wales their foo hygiene scoring system is better than what it is in England!!!

In Wales, thanks to the Welsh assembly, there is far more emphasis on cleanliness and hygiene of the actual property and storerooms, where in England the emphasis is on paperwork (ie paper trails of where stock comes from!!!). Therefore the ratings in Wales are far more appropriate to the business than what they are in England!

So IF the place was previously below standard then it's ok to carry on like that ?

Blame simply lies with the current, that's YOU & only you, Mr Mirza.

Simple fact is under English law the inspection is over 70% paper-work based and hygiene/cleanliness is only 25%. I have posted the link so many times in the other food-rating threads and I have been backed up by so many as well which shows that you chose to ignore those comments or still live in your own bubble where reality laws don't exist.

In Welsh law the paperwork consists only 15% whilst hygiene and cleanliness accounts for 50% of the inspection!!!

But here is the official Government link, if you can be bothered to read them!

uk/
(this also gives the links to the different standards set out in the Welsh Assembly, Northern Ireland Assembly and the Scottish Parliament!)

I used to work with Mr Mirza when he was the assistant manager at another take away in town, he was always in trouble with his bosses for poor hygiene practices and lying about things. I believe this is the reason he was sacked last summer and set up a take away, based on what I saw when I worked with him I wouldn't buy food from there. I know of people who were ill after eating there.

I don't see how take aways can get 0 ratings they must be disgusting.

I am from this estate, a retired factory worker and I know for a fact that the culture and oneness this establishment is bringing to the area has never been there. As far as the score is concerned they escorted me through the chippy and the only drawbacks are building related not hygiene issues which of course is not there fault as they have only been here for half a year. They make fresh chips everyday they have got best prices I feel that everyone in Bolton should come visit just for a chat and walk through I personally vouch for it. David slough regards
