GARDENERS young and old mucked in to help ready a garden in Turton Tower for the planting of flowers and vegetables.

The kitchen garden project aims to restore the area to its former Victorian roots.

It started in 2008, when the garden was covered with brambles, ferns and old bushes which took a further two years to clear.

Now the garden has reached planting stage, and four families helped out on Saturday to make final preparations, including spreading manure as well as planting peas.

Sue Jeffries, a volunteer gardener at the tower, said: “The garden was a real mess, so we have tried to take it back to what it used to be.

“We have run family events since August to try and get children and families more involved.” The project is looking for more volunteers, with sessions taking place on Tuesdays and Saturdays, from 10am to 1pm.
