UNION members held a minute’s silence to remember people who had been killed while at work.

Members of the public services union Unison were joined by Town Hall leaders in Victoria Square yesterday as they marked the day, as part of national commemorations.

On Sunday a wreath was also laid at the war memorial in the square as regional representatives from the Trade Union Congress paid their respects.

Unison’s health and safety representative Steve Fletcher said the demand on the union for workplace injuries and stress continues to be a pressing concern as staff numbers reduce.

He said: “It’s important that we acknowledge that health and safety is important, and acknowledge people who have been killed while working.”
