AS one Parker brother prepares to leave the music business, another is hoping to step into the spotlight.

Lewis Parker — the older brother of Tom, from chart-topping boyband The Wanted — is one third of indie rock trio Treacherous Dogs.

The 30-year-old, from Tonge Moor, is hoping to break into the industry and has been getting advice from his famous sibling.

The former Thornleigh School pupil said: “He helps me out where he can, he’s really busy. He’s in America at the moment.

“He’s obviously been in my shoes before — how it starts, going up to being at the top of your game.”

Treacherous Dogs was formed after the split of Lewis’ previous band, The Jude, in 2012 and the new line-up set about writing and producing material in his North London studio.

Their single Les Filles Francaises has been championed by BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, with their sound described as an eclectic mix of rock and indie with northern soul beats and melodies to sing along to.

Lead singer Lewis, who plays rhythm guitar, said: “The record industry model as it stands is out-dated.

“What we want to do is build it where we are self-sufficient.

“We will build our own team. If a label comes along and they are offering a good deal to benefit us all that’s what we will take.

“We’re not sending our demos off to record labels.”

The group has played four official gigs in London since the beginning of the month and have their first big show in Manchester planned for Friday, May 9, at The Roadhouse, followed by festivals including OsFest in Shropshire.

Lewis said: “It looks like it’s going to be a busy summer. In September, the plan is to go into the studio and record an EP.

“Try and hit the unis and break into Europe and do a few smaller gigs. Just grow the fan base.”

As Lewis hopes to build his band’s fan base, his brother is on The Wanted’s farewell tour, with The Glad You Came and Chasing the Sun singers going their separate ways following their gig in Oklahoma on May 17.

Lewis said: “He has got some plans to do a single. He’s got a few interesting things, he is quite a businessman. He is the brains of the family.

“He’s like Del Boy! He’s always got some scheme or business. He has got his clothing label, his girlfriend has got Hey Dolly.

“I think he’ll be all right he’s just moved into a new house. I think he just wants to experience a normal life for once instead of being pulled from pillar to post.

“I think they are all still best mates, that’s the good thing about it. They will all go off and do their own thing and then they will regroup.”

The Wanted burst on to the music scene in July 2010 when their debut single, All Time Low, went straight to the top of the charts.

They also scored success in America, with reality television series The Wanted Life, which launched on E! in June, 2013, a number one single and performing at the White House before tensions frayed amid rumours of rows over girlfriends, business deals and the thirst for solo careers.

Lewis said: “The first time they were on The X Factor it hit me how big they were and all these fans going insane. After that, it became the norm.

“What he has achieved for a lad from Bolton, who didn’t know what to do with himself at one point, is amazing.”

While Lewis is a fan of his brother’s music, he says would like to emulate the success of the Arctic Monkeys.

He said: “They are a big influence on us, not just musically, but the way they do business.

“It’s all about the music for them, it’s about sustaining a high profile but without selling out.”

It was at the age of six when Lewis started playing the keyboard before discovering the guitar.

He said: “I think I did that until I was about 11, then I went to secondary school and it was absolutely not cool to do anything like that.

“I stopped for years and I picked up the guitar for the first time when I was 18.”

He worked as a personal trainer for 10 years, then in recruitment until earlier this year, as well as stints as a session musician with The Wanted.

He said: “I did a bit of work with them. I’ve seen behind the scenes. It’s interesting to see how a top level pop act works.

“We’re feeling confident. What we’ve done in a short amount of time is what a lot of bands would do in a couple of years.”
