A WALK in memory of two horses killed in an arson attack will take place tomorrow.

Friends and family of Sam Brierley, whose horses Penny and General died in a blaze, will walk from Veterans Farm in Arthur Lane, Ainsworth, to Breightmet and Darcy Lever.

The horses died after an arsonist set fire to stables in Hathaway Drive, Astley Bridge, while the animals were inside.

The event will see people in fancy dress ride horses and others follow on foot.

Money will be raised by the group to fund a plaque to remember the horses.

Jenny Brierley, Ms Brierley’s sister, said: “We are hoping to get a memorial stone in remembrance of the horses. Sam hasn’t got anything now and we just want to give her something she can remember them by.

“She is in too much shock to attend the walk. Sam is grateful people are doing the walk. Everybody has been really supportive. There is nothing anybody can do to make it better, but the walk shows people’s support.”

Firefighters tackled the blaze, but were unable to save the horse and pony.

Neighbours raised the alarm after seeing the fire on Tuesday, April 22, at about 4.45am.

Stable owner David Davies was due to sell the stables, his nearby home and riverbank land at an auction days after the fire.

Ms Brierley said: “The horses meant everything to Sam. She is devastated. She just feels empty now, that’s what she keeps saying.”

Anyone wanting to take part in the walk is asked to meet at Veterans Farm tomorrow at noon.

The walk will start at 12.30pm.

No-one has been arrested for in connection with the blaze.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police on 0161 856 5772 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
