Walkden man impaled through groin in freak garden rake accident

The Bolton News: Fire crews helped shorten the rake so the man could be taken to hospital Fire crews helped shorten the rake so the man could be taken to hospital

A FREAK gardening accident left a Walkden man impaled through the groin on a rake.

The 36-year-old man was cutting his hedge when he fell off a stepladder and onto the handle of the rake.

Paramedics transported the man via air ambulance to Wythenshawe Hospital.

Firefighters from Farnworth, Bolton Central and Leigh attended the house in Ashton Field Drive, Walkden, just after 4pm.

They shortened the rake so the man could be taken to hospital.

He was given gas and air at the house before being taken away in the helicopter.

Farnworth watch manager John Duffin said: "The man managed to impale himself through his groin on the handle of a garden rake.

"Paramedics were already there when we arrived, and they asked for us to shorten the handle before taking the man to hospital."

The accident took at least 3 fire engines (minimum of 15 firefighters) and an at least 1 ambulance AND the air ambulance? And this is breaking news in Bolton?

I really do hope the man is ok, but to call on the services of 3 fire engines?

People can comment on this but not the story about the drink driver who was 3 times the limit and rammed police 3 times in an attempt to get away, and has been convicted of drink driving on 2 previous occasions and gets 12 months?

Poor from the BN.

At least he did not step on the rake before it impaled him. People are so very stupid, standing on a ladder cutting a hedge, other equipment in the vicinity and they bleat when they sustain an injury...

I do hope he recovers but I also hope he learns a number of lessons about personal health and safety

Health and safety gone mad! Accidents are accidents because that's just what they are. We can't wrap up in cotton wool all the time. We've all done things , left things where we shouldn't and fell/slipped/bumped.

I walk upstairs holding my baby to put him to bed, stepping over small toys my toddler has threw on the stairs. surprised i don't get done for endangering my child. But we don't plan on falling we just want things done quick without over dramatizing everything.

I just hope he's ok, and will laugh about it one day.

They get called out and generally do not know what to expect, so its better to send to many than not enough.

I would imagine the guy rang for an ambulance and it was the ambulance control who called the firebrigade. The info fire brigade would receive would be on the lines of male fallen from height and impaled through the groin with life threatening injuries. They wont be told he's in the street at the front you can park at the side of him or he's in the back gardens and he needs lifting over a fence and carrying to ambulance.
It must be life threatening due to one of the largest arteries in the body being near the groin and you cant see what damage there is internally.
You can comment on this and not the rammed police car as there is no court case pending. Obviously the drunk will be charged to appear in court so no comments as a jury will need to be selected who will need to be neutral.

Just to set a few stories straight, this was a freak accident, not something that happened from someone being stupid. The guy's daughter was actually stood next to him holding the rake and supervising him. Unfortunately, he did slip and his daughter is now distraught at what she saw and feels responsible. And to confirm it was actually the off duty fireman who lived next door who contacted the emergency services and as the above comment mentions, the fire brigade don't get a full run down of what has happened. So what if it took 3 fire engines and an air ambulance. My friend is lucky to be alive by missing vital arteries. He has had to undergo emergency surgery and I for one, want to thank everyone that helped. So to all the pathetic people out there, I hope you take your words back as some day you or you kids may need the emergency services and you will hope to God that everyone is there to help.
