A DANGEROUS driver took a police officer on a terror ride through Bolton town centre on the bonnet of his car after ploughing into him as he tried to evade arrest.

Gary Boote was driving along Bradshawgate and Bark Street in a Toyota Corolla with false number plates when the incident happened, Bolton Crown Court heard.

He initially appeared to be obeying the police instruction to pull over, the court was told, but Boote then suddenly reversed and drove off, with PC Corner clinging to the bonnet of the vehicle, Ian Metcalfe, prosecuting, told Judge Timothy Stead.

At one point the Toyota, with PC Corner still holding on, came close to another vehicle, before the police officer released his grip and fell off, Mr Metcalfe said.

PC Corner was taken to hospital but was not seriously injured.

Boote had been seen driving dangerously through Bolton on the Saturday evening, but PC Corner and a colleague were unaware of that when they attempted to stop him, Bolton Crown Court heard.

Boote pleaded guilty to assaulting PC Michael Corner with intent to resist arrest.

He had previously admitted dangerous driving on the same day, the early hours of September 9 last year.

Judge Stead told Boote, aged 23, of Rusheylea Close, Halliwell, that his case was being adjourned for sentencing to take place on June 6. He was granted bail until then.

“That is not to be taken, by you, as an indication of what will happen on the day of sentence,” said the judge.
