BUILDING work has started on an ultra-modern new roof at a railway station used daily by Bolton commuters.

The roof, which will have 15 curved steel ribs, is part of a £44 million investment from Network Rail to make Manchester Victoria a modern station while retaining its grade II-listed features.

Station users will be able to witness cranes installing a number of smaller beams and supports to provide form and stability to the structure over the coming days.

The overall project at Manchester Victoria includes the installation of a new mezzanine access deck plus a ticket barrier, concourse flooring and external doors.

The roof has been designed to allow more natural daylight into the station.
