DETAILS for Westhoughton’s “spectacular” marking of the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One have been announced.

A theatre and music production is being held at Westhoughton High School, in conjunction with the town council.

Pupils from the school and the town’s primary schools will be taking part, alongside Westhoughton’s iconic brass and folk bands, Wingates Band and The Houghton Weavers, and the On The Go Theatre Company.

Cllr Christopher Peacock, Westhoughton North and Chew Moor borough councillor, said the show would rival centenary events in towns and cities across the country.

He said: “This will be spectacular. It is a credit to the town council that we are able to do this for our town.”

The July 19 show will be split into two halves of between 50 minutes and an hour.

Anyone interested in attending the performance in the school’s drama theatre must apply for up to four tickets, and they will be allocated via a draw. Successful applicants will receive their tickets by July 1.

Cllr Pat Allen said: “This is a wonderful programme, absolutely brilliant. It should be a terrific show.”

Tickets for the commemorative performance, which starts at 2pm, are free. To apply write to: The Town Clerk, Westhoughton Town Council, Town Hall, Market Street, Westhoughton, BL5 3AW, or email westhough tontc@tiscali.co.uk. Closing date for applications is June 9.
