A DESIGN for Bolton’s new town centre skate park has been unveiled.

The proposed design has been created by designers Freestyle Skateparks with the help of young skaters and will see the existing steel facility in Dawes Street replaced by a larger concrete park.

The skate park will cost £180,000 and will be paid for through a one-off funding pot by the council.

The new design will see the skate park extended across the street, into the nearby car park — with the current footpath to Morrisons being diverted.

It will measure 1,275 square metres — almost double the size of the current one.

The new design has been drawn up specifically to accommodate all disciplines, skills and age levels together in one safe space.

The current park was opened by Bolton Council in 2007 following a campaign by young people, and is regularly used by skateboarders, BMX bikers and scooter users. Its popularity has meant that the park has often become overcrowded.

Planning permission for the new project was granted in August, 2013 and Hertfordshire-based Freestyle Skateparks was awarded the contract by the council after pitching its ideas to a group of 12 young park users.

Thomas Searson, aged 21, from Westhoughton, said: “I was actually involved in getting the first park set up in 2007.

“This time the council chose three different designers to pitch their ideas and our group picked the best one — we liked the scale of the design and the quirky objects featured in it.

“It was great for us to be involved in that process and I can’t wait to be one of the first to use it when it’s ready.”

Freestyle is the UK’s oldest and largest skate park design and build company.

Designer Jack Micklewright said: “We have built 400 challenging parks over the last 30 years, but this one is special.

“It offers a genuine chance to increase community integra-tion and cohesion.

“It should be a real step-up and we’re confident it will be well received — I have skated for 15 years and it will be amazing to have a go when it is finished.”

Council leader Cllr Cliff Morris added: “The design for the skate park is suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities, and the new park will provide an excellent place for young people to meet and enjoy their sport.”

Building work is expected to start on the new park in July or August, but some preparatory work is likely to take place before then. The project is expected to then take about 12 weeks to complete.

If they want a skate park they should pay for it themselves not expect me to.

Its a drug dealers social club down there.

No money for MOSS BANK PARK but I bet some Councillors relative has pushed for this.

Who is Bolton Council paying to build these things? £180,000 for a few bits of metal.

Someone should investigate, it stinks of corruption, the BOLTON NEWS should provide a full cost breakdown.

Stop your moaning. The current park is far too small for the number who want to skate. Activities for teenagers is needed around the town centre.

So you have spent time down there buying drugs Jim? Stop talking cr@p, the kids have a lot of respect for that Skate Park because they know it will be taken away if it abused. There is CCTV, some kids are quite protective of the park and have adopted their own social policy of care for both park and compatriots.

£180,000 is not much to spend for smiling faces on kids having a good time.

£180000

your joking.

I demand a detailed breakdown of the cost of that skatepark.

I bet £100k has been used for "Consulatation fees and risk assessment"

If you think that £180k is cheap for a few bits of metal I have some magic beans for sale,

Bolton Council are treating the People as CASH COWS, that's why UKIP are gaining support because they have no confidence that the council will spend our money wisely.

Great news, I remember while looking at the one on Southport Pier how fantastic it was, and thought Bolton should have one similar. These kids are doing a skilful pastime, they are socialising positively, they are not skulking round robbing the elderly or drug dealing, so all you negatives get of their backs, and when it is built go and watch them and cheer that Bolton council has spent some of our taxes on something absolutely worthwhile for once.

"are selves"

you mean "ourselves".
Didn't know this was a spelling contest now. How about we concentrate about the skate park, which this thread is about. Thanks
I just thought you'd appreciate the correction and a little education. Don't be resistant to education, you should welcome it. Oh, and you also keep putting "off", where you mean "of".
Like I said before talk about the skatepark not my spelling. Cheers pal

The people complaining are those who will complain if all these kids are skating on the town hall steps/benches! There need to be more outdoor facilities/sports facilities in the town centre, its a brilliant idea. And like someone else said if they are going to deal drugs (which they probably dont) they wouldn't do it where there is CCTV.

I'm just trying to give a little correction, don't get so upset about it. You'll never learn if you just get defensive every time someone corrects you.

You don't know how old I am, so how do you know I'm not acting my age? What age should I be to offer someone advice on their spelling?

Doggerbrown again: "it's a little sad what your doing here really"

You mean "you're" not "your".

Doggerbrown once more: "Sure you have some thing better to do in your life"

Indeed I do, but sometimes it's nice to be helpful.

Don't you think that the only recreational hobby that the kids have that is free to access is more important than figures ? most of these kids that are on the park and using the facility are very respectful, they control any trouble and work with the community not against it, and if you actually took the time to stop and talk them you will find out just how passionate they are, you will also find some semi pro skateboarders use this park and have actually learnt there skill on there, yes they do deserve a bigger park to practice there art and to go on and help teach the young with there skill building,

JIM271 I did not realise you actually paid for all of this ? now instead of sitting there **** about this why don't you actually ask for a breakdown on the cost of the bus station that was not needed why is that costing so much when a better development down south which is bigger cost less than half the price that Bolton's is, we do not need a bigger bus station but we do need more free recreational developments for our kids that they actually need. and further more Bolton do not need more coffee houses, bookies or charity shops Bolton council for once have got it right more Skate Parks not just Bolton town centre but in the surrounding areas.

I don't know if anyone remembers, but the skate park we currently have was supposed to be temporary! We were told it was only going to be there a year before a better skate park was built in a different location, we've had that for 7 years now and over that time it has become a danger hazard. The ramps aren't safe to skate anymore, sharp metal edges and slippery surfaces make it a recipe for disaster! We need that new concrete park!
